I've been working hard on something that looks pretty cool. It's a 5 page story and I'll upload a page for you to see maybe this weekend. I was just excited about it and wanted to let you know I haven't forgotten about you.

Oh, I'm having my patio built into an office! It's going to be really great and I can not wait to move in.
But it will be a few weeks from now. I'll try and upload some pictures, maybe. Who am I kidding. I'll never do that.
Darn it.

The Preview for the ROBOTS movie is finally up. It's probably been up for a while, I stopped checking. It looks really super cool. But Robin Williams is in it as the plucky side kick. It looks like he over runs the preview, I just hope it's not all like that. Regardless, it's robots how can you go wrong.

Oh, we were able to sneak out to see the INCREDIBLES on Sunday. It was really good. I kept thinking about the upcoming Fantastic Four movie. There is no way it will be as good as this one. They used the super powers really "Incredibly". Plus it was a really great movie with nice character development and plot and morals and all that jazz. Oh and a giant robot or 2 also. Fun, Fun, Fun.

J Chris Campbell signs deal with comic book publisher AdHouse Books.

Under the imprint of Wide Awake Press, Mr. Campbell has produced a number of high-production pamphlets that will tickle your funny bone, and other parts. His new book, Zig Zag, will be his own anthology, a virtual cornucopia of yuck-yucks!

Busy, busy, busy getting ready for Small Press Expo. It's going to be a blast!

9.15.2004

Hey kids! My buddy Andy Runton's OWLY is available for purchasing at Top Shelf. It's about an Owl and his friendship with a little worm. It's not as perverted as it sounds. Just go order a copy and I promise you will not be dissatisfied. In fact, if you don't like it. Send it to me and I'll send you the cash for it. Offer excludes those of you exclusively into scantly clad big-breasted chicks with guns in books with foil stamped covers. Not suggest for devil worshipers with 2 or more tattoos of "lord Satan" on their body. May cause warm sensation around heart. Ask Top Shelf if Owly is right for you.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow comes out this weekend. I really do hope it's going to be good. It looks like it could just be eye candy. I know it's hard to get excited about movies these days. But you'll never know unless you give it a try.

8.30.2004

This weekend I saw the movie Garden State.
It was really good.
You should go see it.
I think you would like it.
I know I did.

In other useless ME news I went to a super fun Pinball Party at the new digs of Crosby Stills. Who happens to have one of my good buddies working for them now. Those lucky dogs.

8.24.2004

Is it bad that I never use this thing? I'm horrible.

But hey, it's okay. On another note I'm getting ready for the Small Press Expo
!!! Who knows what kind of mess we'll get ourselves into. Boy howdy!

It's on Oct 1-3 so hopefully my wife will hold out on having our kid till I get back. It's hard to type with my fingers crossed.

8.04.2004

I just finished this little illustration for Kitchen Sink Magazine. The article is about Survival Research Laboratories. The headline was When Robots Need Rogain.

Now to finish up some other work. With this guy.

8.03.2004

Well, it looks like I've got a long stretch of stuff coming up. Really wanna go to SPX this year. I'm planning on it but it all really depends on if the baby is doing okay. It's due the end of October. We've got our fingers crossed and our nose to the grind stone. Hopefully we'll have a lot of really great stuff for everyone.

If you want to show your support then nows your chance to fund the trip! Your donations will go to pay for room and food. I promise not to spend it on comics. Scouts Honor! Just make a check out to J Chris Campbell and send it to P.O. Box 14234 Greenville SC 29610.

We're in it for us and you and that guy over there. Not him. The one with the really tight spider-man hat. Yeah, the one made for kids. That guy. Yeah, OK maybe we shouldn't be in it for that guy. Don't even think about him. Thanks!

7.25.2004

Thanks for coming out to the show everybody. I hate a super fun time and snagged some cool comics.

Isn't there some movie opening Wednesday nation wide?
With some showings at 12 o'clock tonight? Seems to me that there was some movie.
Huh, if only I could remember.

Oh yeah, Spider-Man 2!

6.13.2004

INDY INVASION!!
We had a tremendous time at the Heroes Convention in Charlotte NC. Met tons of amazingly talented and unbelievably funny people. Sold a lot of Wide Awake Press Stuff and spent it all on comics. Fun, fun, fun and more fun! I'll post some pictures soon. With info on what goodies I found.

6.10.2004

I'll have my new mini, SQUARE, at the Heroes Convention this weekend.

6.09.2004

Rick Bradford over at Poopsheet just reviewed some of my mini-comics. Give it a read and check out his other reviews of mini-comics.

6.01.2004

Wow! I had a really unbelievable time at Spoleto this weekend. We saw The Have Nots and Chicago's Second City. Unbelievably funny mix of improv and sketch comedy.

Of course I had to make a trip to one of the best comic shops in South Carolina, Atomic Comics. Great selection of independent comics and all sorts of pop culture goodies right in the heart of downtown, across from the American Theatre.

But one of the must see events was the One Man Star Wars Trilogy. In a little over an hour Charles Ross flies thru all of the original Star Wars movies. Complete with impersonations, sound effects and music. All done with an unbelievable level of energy that will leave you exhausted with laughter.

5.28.2004

I'm going to Charleston for the weekend.
I'll be seeing the One Man Star Wars Trilogy live performance.
I wish I had a link for yah.

It's fun but they take longer than 3 minutes.

5.23.2004

New MuM album is out. I just ordered it and I can't wait! Their site seems to be down. But these guys have it all figured out.

Where will all my stuff go?

5.20.2004

Ok, I'm a fan. Is that so bad? Is it bad that I've clocked hundreds of hours watching episodes? For the majority of my life? I say no it isn't. Maybe those conventions are a little sad and I'm not a huge supporter of dressing up like some alien culture and learning their whole imaginary language. But gosh darn it! I am a Star Trek fan. It feels good to say that and I feel a little proud. Especially after the last few episodes of this seasons Enterprise. It's really good stuff. They've manage to up the action and create an intricate plot and man is it good. Maybe the acting is a little over the top sometimes. But gosh darn it! The last 5 episodes of Enterprise have been amazingly cool. They've managed to almost completely destroy the ship. Killed over 50 of it's crew along with one of a second tier character. Every episode there is a struggle physical and mental. Anyway, if you get a chance this summer. Skip the episode where the captain gets turned into some creature. Hang in there though and please give it a chance. It's not you're grandma's Star Trek. (insert cheesy where no man has gone before line here)

5.19.2004

I'm getting tired of good shows being canceled.
It sucks. Especially when the last episode is really good.
Just wanted to say that.

Being mistaken for one of the bank teller security guards, Jim was let in without even so much as a glance from anyone. Except Randy. Randy knew and he was just waiting for that perfect moment. Jim walked to the back where the safe was. I’m not sure really, but I think it was in the back. I wasn’t there so I’m really just recreating the whole thing. But I’m pretty sure the majority of banks have safes in the back of the building. So let’s go with that.
Jim walked to the back of the building and no one watched. Except Randy. Randy watched.
It was 9:28 am. Jim knew he shouldn’t have stopped off for the doughnut. He also knew it would throw off his timing. But the “HOT NOW” sign was on and he also really knew that doughnuts are so good when they first come out of the oven. Is it his fault the route to the bank went right past the darn Doughnut Hut? Well, regardless he was there now and he was heading to the back of the building.
“May I help you” Randy said to the next person in line. Then he glanced back over his shoulder to watch Jim walk past the branch manager’s office. He turned back and leaned forward a little in his chair. “I can help the next person in line down here,” Randy spoke a little louder this time.
Jim looked down and noticed a flake of sugar from earlier. He brushed it off and hit his nametag sending it flying across the room and into a filing cabinet making a loud metal “clang!” “Oh Shhh” Jim said in that quite little inside your mouth voice. You know when you’re trying to talk to someone without moving your mouth. I guess it’s similar to the technique used by a ventriloquist. But I really don’t know.
“That’s ten, twenty, forty and one, two, three….” “Clang!”
Randy’s heart dropped down beneath the counter and he glanced back over to see what the noise was. He saw Jim walking over towards the branch manager’s office.
Jacob asked, “Hey buddy, can I have the rest of my money now?” He wasn’t usually in such a hurry. It’s just that he had left his dog in the car and he wanted to get back out there before his brain had melted out of one of his little fluffy ears.
“Oh sure, sorry about that.” Randy fumbled through the rest of the ones calling out the total as he went along. Adding it up for you on the spot so you didn’t have to worry about it later.
“Three, four, five and six.” Standard procedure for the bank. What wasn’t so standard, was a guy dressed up as a bank security guard crawling on the floor towards the branch manager’s office door.
“Thank you and you have a nice day sir.”
Randy twirled his sign to say teller closed and started to walk over to Jim.

the mostest ugliest robot ever,
walks the streets at night.

5.14.2004

Take a moment from your day and go watch the The Incredibles preview. It's longer lasting with even better flavor. It'll probably be the best super hero movie ever. EVER! While you're enjoying you're computer animation for the day, go read about the robot movie. It'll probably bring my shabby little robot empire crumbling down around me. In some way. Oh shut up. You Don't Know. I'm Leaving!

5.13.2004

If you listen to music all day while you're working or surfing then Audioscrobbler is for you. It tracks the music you play and ranks it against what other people are playing. You can check and see who has similar music taste and what that person is listening to. It's ultra cool but still in the beta-testing phase. So it's on and off line often. Check me out. I swear that Backstreet Boys track is my niece’s. For real.

5.12.2004

My friend Andy who draws Owly got his book picked up by one of the bestestest publishers around, Top Shelf Comics. Can you even believe it? Well you better buddy. Maybe dreams do come true. Naahh.

Oh, I also finally posted pictures of Wide Awake Press from our time with Top Shelf at the Atlanta Comic Convention.

Wow, I just got flung out of that whirlwind we call the first quarter of the year and landed right on my nose. My nasal surgery was good. I'm going tomorrow and the doc will take out my nose splints. Hopefully he will say I'll be feeling better any day now. Cause right now I feel lowsey. I'll post a full detail of my surgery with pictures and time line for all those allergy suffering people out there.

Also my bestests friends at Startle Studios are making the long trek to California. Good luck buddies and take some pictures of the Cadillac Ranch

But first I have some work to do for my good friends at Highwire

4.26.2004

Wow! Busy, busy, busy! I had a wonderful time at the two, yes 2, art shows this weekend. Thanks to everyone who made it out. I'm sorry I missed some of you. I was bouncing back and forth like a weeble wobbling fool.

Now it's time for my surgery!!! I'll be having my deviated septum corrected on April the 27th. So I'll be recovering the rest of the week. I'm thinking about documenting the whole thing for the web. Just because I don't have enough going on, NOT!!

4.19.2004

I had a terrific time at the Atlanta Comicon this weekend. Meet some great people and bought some neat stuff. Rob and Chris of Top Shelf Comics are amazingly wonderful fellas. They let Wide Awake Press set up with them all weekend and we were able to annoy them nonstop all weekend. Thanks to everyone who came out. I’ll be posting pictures and stuff on Wide Awake Press real soon.

4.07.2004

I finally got to tell all my friends and family the good news. We are going to be expecting a new Campbell family member sometime around November 4. It’s really exciting and I can’t wait to build a page all about it so it doesn’t all show up here. Until then…

3.29.2004

Mike helped me learn some flash stuff. I will probably never use. Oh well. Thanks Mike!

3.25.2004

Every now and then I like to write. So instead of saving to my computer someplace I decided I could post it in my blog. That's what blogs are for right? Aren't they? Why aren't you answering me? You've just become so difficult lately and now you aren't even answering me! Well. I can do the same you know? You just wait, I'm gonna stop and you're gonna be like "Hey, why did you stop. I was going to say something. I was just waiting for the right time." Well now is the right time. So you better pipe up. Hello! I can't believe you just hung up on me.

It’s Wednesday and I’m on my way to work. This yellow station wagon cuts me off and speeds away down the road. I don’t get mad I just look at the car real hard like, “you idiot.” Then I notice that a wheel is wobbling or something. I think about how I could pantomime a warning but give up when I realize I’d never catch up with him. Besides, he is probably an idiot. So right then I drive past this guy on a motorcycle dragging a trashcan behind him and I’m like, “That trashcan is going to have a hole in the bottom from the friction with the concrete.” Then I remember that it’s trash day and I completely forgot to take out the trash and there are 2 bags in the kitchen and we have a new big trash can outside that the city just provided and I totally filled it up the week before and then my train of thoughts is derailed by the next motorcycle guy. He’s got a ladder on there with him.
You know the old Bi-planes with the 2 wings? Well that’s the way the ladder was on his bike. Strapped to his back like he was going to try and fly over the trashcan when it was released. But I don’t drive to work through a shantytown circus so I know that’s not what’s going on.
So latter on down the road, I try and figure out what the two motorcycle guys possible needed a trashcan and ladder for so urgently. Why couldn’t they wait for a guy with a truck or a van or even a car? Anyway, latter on down the road a black dog strolls across the street in front of me. Which isn’t really an odd thing but right after that the wobble wheel station wagon comes pulling out of a driveway. I think for a moment that maybe he’s following me, but following in front of me. What’s that called when you follow someone, but you go in front, just so they don’t think you’re following them. There’s a word for that right?
Anyhow, he pulls out of a driveway and goes barreling down the road and I look over at his tire and it’s wobbling. I’m thinking maybe his tire will burst and he’ll lose control … I didn’t get to finish the rest of the thought, because that’s when his hubcap goes flying off. You know what I mean. It really doesn’t fly off, it kind of rolls off really fast. It hits the ground spinning like a tire and does a little loop circling behind the wagon like it’s trying to catch back up or go down one of those big yellow things you drop coins in for charity. It rolls for a little bit and then it flops over.
So then I think about how I could pantomime, “Hey buddy your hub cap just flew off like a guy with a ladder strapped to his motorcycle.” But the wagon is way gone.
You see cars without hubcaps all the time and you see hubcaps without cars. But it’s a rare treat to see the actual uncapping of a hub in motion. I consider this morning’s drive to work a rare treat and keep my eyes peeled for more pleasant surprises. Unfortunately the last thing I see is a man in a motorized wheel chair driving down the road. He was dressed head to toe in camouflage but I decide that’s really not that rare of a site. The rest of the day I wonder what all that might have meant. Were these some great signs from the cosmos? Telling me to turn back and empty my trash and fix my gutters before the dog gets run over by a car he didn’t see. Or was it just a normal drive to work?
On the drive back home I notice the hubcap lying on the ground under the bridge. I had plenty of time to notice because the traffic was backed up. They were cleaning the underpass and had the traffic down to one lane. Which again isn’t an odd thing unless you were with me on the drive to work the next morning.

3.23.2004

I wrote too many words down there. So I'll put this guy here to make it less as many words.

3.21.2004

Felt like writing some.
My Feet Smell Like Mud
Lem didn't like the pocket on his black T-shirt. He stole the pic-n-rip from his mom's sewing kit and proceeded to remove it stitch by stitch. He sat on the edge of his bed. A black and white TV blaring some Warner Brothers cartoon. You know the kind with the celebrities that aren't alive anymore. The one's that maybe your parents remember. The cartoon gags come off like inside jokes. Hidden meanings that you don't quite understand but feel like you should. You recognize W.C. Fields and the Marx Brothers. But that's about it. Characterizations of characters played on the big screen long ago. Bubble through the little TV set on top of a dresser. One of the drawers fronts long gone. So you can see the contents without opening it. It smells like old wet wood and the air is damp with the humidity of the storm poring outside the screen door.
He pulls out the last stitch and holds up the de-pocketed Tee. The holes from the thread left a reminder of why he hated the shirt in the first place. Why would anyone want a pocket T? V-neck pocket T is what your grandpa wore in the garden or cutting grass. What are you suppose to put in the pocket in the first place. It couldn't be anything heavy.
Maybe that's where you keep your handkerchief. Folded with a triangle sticking up. Classes up the T-shirt with a little flair. Regardless the reason, it wasn't enough for Lem to need it on there. So off it came.
He slipped his altered shirt back over his head and dropped the pic-n-rip on the floor.
Kicking back on his pillow he watched the end of the cartoon. The funnyman with the big hand dances his way from an old car and up a red carpet. Midway he stops and goes in to a little jig. The crowd screams and rolls in a rhythmic repeated pattern. Lem watches a girl in the background faint 3 times during the dance. He wonders why they had to do that and thinks about the Flintstones. How Fred will walk past 3 couches before he gets out the front door. Fred with his tie and tiger patterned knee length T-shirt.

3.12.2004

Finished GTA3 the other night! Now I can get some work done. At least until October when the new one comes out.

3.11.2004

I finished GTAIII! No more distractions. I can get to work on some new stuff for the Westend Festival coming up next month. I'll also be setting up at the Atlanta Comicon next month. I'll have some new stuff for that along with other books from the Wide Awake crew.

Wow, I'm finishing up 2 new mini-comics for Fluke this weekend. "Duflachies" and "It's the Attic Bugs". I'll have them online after the show. Plus I helped Rob Patterson put together a little sketch book comic that is real purty. Scroll down for the Fluke lowdown and stay tuned for more information.

1.19.2004

Hey, let's all go to Athens for the Fluke Mini Comics Festival!

January 31st
at Tasty World
312 E. Broad Street, Athens, GA
noon until 6 PM.

Admission is just $5.00 for all attendees, which includes a copy of the Fluke anthology.

FLUKE is a mini-comic festival that has been organized by Athens-area comic artists, underground publishers and their enthusiasts since 2002. Conceived as a venue for the discussion and exchange of timely ideas related to mini-comics, zines, and other independent publications. FLUKE is not a large comic convention or merchandising-saturated extravaganza. This isn't to say we don't like our share of stuff – 'cause we do. However, we have kept the organization of the event as simple as possible to ensure that it remains focused on work and ideas rather than merchandising.
